Abhyudaya is a unique pedagogic innovation which aims to address the 'Big Problem' of urban poverty & foster social responsibility & character building among B-school students through 'experiential learning'. SPJIMR is the first and may be the only B-school in India to launch a mentorship program aimed at preparing its participants for top management roles as part of the curriculum. It aims at recognizing the inequity (and perhaps injustice) existing in the wide gap between poor and rich of urban India and learn to contribute as a member of the 'have' group as meeting obligation to the 'have not' group and experience the joy of giving. Abhyudaya also gives them opportunity to appreciate the dynamics of urban poverty manifested through slums and identify the role and the challenges offered to the business sector.
Abhyudaya, a Sanskrit word, means "welfare and development for all". It is a 1.5 credit, year-long mentorship program through which first year MBA students mentor bright, underprivileged children (whom we call "Sitaras") of the neighbouring government schools. Through this initiative, SPJIMR is making an attempt to play the role of a catalyst in providing financial and other support to enable the Sitaras to realize their full potential.
Being a student of SPJIMR, I have collaborated with the Team of Abhyudaya Administration to make a documentary series on the lives of 12 uniques Sitaras. Our main goal is to come out with a beautiful Coffee Table Book narrating the lives of these precious children.
In the above picture, Suraj Sawant is the Sitara - a simple boy with benevolent smile, loyal heart and resolute dreams. He just appeared for his 12th Boards this year, and is preparing for engineering entrance exams. I went with him to his home, spent time with him and his family - Mom and Dad and 2 siblings. From the moment I met him till the moment we parted - his smile was heart - warming. I wish him all the luck in this world and I hope he accomplishes his dreams.
I will be interacting with him and 11 more students throught out 2014 - till the time my course gets over with SPJMR. Truly looking forward to this amazing journey ahead!
